Question 1- IN WHAT WAYS HAS MY MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

Using Janelle Monae’s queen video as a comparison, the lack of dynamic camera movement was used as a way to create a sense of symmetry, static shots also introduced us to each of the characters in the video whilst simultaneously immersing the viewer into the location.  This also applies to the editing, the idea was to edit with the beat similar to Miguel’s Do you video ad watch the Duck’s Poppin’ off, this showing. Similar to the reference text of this genre my video was narrative driven with a beginning, middle and end as a way to visually show the song’s change in tone, this predominately relying on the artists actions and movements.

Question 4- HOW DID I USE NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND THE RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES?

I feel that i have effecticely used new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages of this project as a way to find creative methods of displaying and sharing my work bu also through finding information.

QUESTION 3- WHAT HAVE I LEARN'T FROM AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?

Audience feedback is crucial when creating products such as mine as it allows the artists, producers and others who worked on the products to know whether it was well received and how it can be improved. Now there are hundreds of ways fans can express their opinions of their artist's work through YouTube comments to creating their own reviews, through videos or blogs. With websites such as Instagram or twitter the audience can go directly to the artist to express their views, whether or not they get a response relies on how big the artist is.
I used audience feed back through out my project. The first instance was to initially understand who my target audience would be so i used Survey monkey and shared it across friends and colleagues. Knowing that the profitable market are in the 15-24 (millennials, generation Y) demographic i felt that by having an online survey i could easily reach this market as they are known for their online use, hence why the use of a website to promote my album. once i had an understanding on who my target market. This served as my primary audience research and once i knew who my target market was I began to develop my idea, once i had my idea I pitched it to a group of my target audience, below is a prezi showing what they thought of my ideas:

My Target audience would be females in the 15-24 age bracket due to the upbeat nature of the song and video. These would also be people who are fans of my chosen artist and other similar artist, because she is new to the scene this would potentially be a more niche audience, when I asked people's opinions of my song when i pitched my ideas the majority did not seem to know my chosen song or artists, this meant that I could be creative with my products  because people would not already have preset ideas of what to expect for my music video which i thought was a positive. In my audience research i understood that because my artist is female the video would most likely appeal to girls who are considered to have alternative interests in regards to films and music, specially those in the R&B sub genres that could link to Hip Hop, therefore it could appeal more to racial minorities as these are genres dominated by these groups of people.
Primary audience:

My secondary audience would be males in a similar demographic as this genre of music would appeal to them due to some inspiration for this genre coming from dubstep.  The fact that the song is less known my secondary audience would have to have niche interests most likely having interests that over lap with the modern 'geek' culture.

My tertiary target audience are slightly older older grouns (25-30) and most likely female. They have similar traits and interest as my Primary and secondary target audience but have a greater understanding of the deeper themes in the music and also are ones who are most likely to be able to go to my artist's concerts as some locations have age restrictions appealing to an older audience.

Once i made my video i created another online survey (https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/D6GDWTW)  and linked it to my video, i also held a focus group so i could have people expressing their opinions through a discussion following a screening of the video.
here are their opnions:

Because the link to the survey was in my video a variety of people were able to answer and express their views.

Conclusion

Overall I found that the feedback for my products was pretty positive. Most of the criticism was aimed towards the quality of the Lip sync which was slightly off at times, also some of the quality of the film differed due to changing in settings specially in areas in low light where i had to use a high ISO which caused some grain in some of the shots. People also found issue with the narrative i was trying to convey but this could be as a result of their unfamiliarity to the song or my inability to clearly portray a simple narrative resulting in confusion for the viewers. Besides these issues when asked how they would score the video between 1 and 10 (1 being not so good and 10 being really good) many scored it between 7 and 8 which i find to be partially above average and therefore good. Taking this into account if i was to make any improvements it would be by re shooting some scenes with a better quality camera preventing the quality from fluctuating from good to bad. I would also have my artist practice the song lyrics better so the lip sync won't be as unmatched.
Overall i found that obtaining audience feedback was helpful in the development of my project because it helped me understand who my target audience was and what i could do to create products that they would enjoy.

Question 2- THE WEEKND HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF MY MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?

First attempt at the website

http://09aguinaesilva.wix.com/mayaa

work diary

From further website research i saw that my website needed a news page which showed what my artists was doing and other news regarding her, in the websites this was a way to keep fans informed which creates a connection between the artist and their fan base. this is also an effective way of promoting new products such as merchandise and the release of a new album.

Another aspect my website needed was an 'about' page, this page has the information about the artist such as their background and what interested them in going into music, this is also another way how the fan base can feel connected to the artist as it adds to their persona and humanises them further so to seem more like simple people.

Work Diary- Taking Pictures for the website

Having taken the first set of images for the website I experimented with the initial idea I had of displaying a 1950's style 'pin up' look initially inspired by Rosie the riveter . using the tutorial below I attempted to transform the images which would serve as the backgrounds for the website, I wasn't happy with the result as they didn't seem to fit with the alternative theme of the music that my artist would have been. because of his I have decided to re-do this shoot but in a different location, potentially altering my subject's wardrobe so o look more edgy and therefore interesting. in this shoot I had my subject in a white top as I felt that the simplicity would prevent distraction from other aspects of the image such as the red lips which are a direct link to the tea cup marked with lipstick which would be present in the video and digipack as a potential metaphor for the artist. By doing this the result seemed bland and boring.

Work Diary- Developing ideas for Website

Today I drew up new drafts for the website, I went through my previous ideas of including a slideshow of pictures in the front page and decided to reconsider and change the home page to just be one simple image with links to other pages or ways to connect to areas where the album could be brought similar to that of Lana Del Rey's website.

I feel that a simplistic minimalistic website will appeal more to my target audience.

Shooting for music video 2

Continuing with the shooting process today's shoots were done in the photo studio so to make use of the lighting. i wanted to create a series of shots where the lighting shifts from dark to light so by doing it indoors in a room without windows meant i had easy control of the lighting. This also meant that the background was a dark color that i needed as i wanted the shots to contrast with the white of my artist's top. The white being a style decisions due to the purity of the color an it's representation of rebirth and new beginnings.

Work Diary- Shooting for Music Video

This weekend I began filming for my music video.
we did the scene at the diner party which had other cast members playing snobby guests and the 'date' scene where the artist/singer was in a scenic location outside surrounded by flowers, whilst being wooed by the love interest who purposely had no chemistry with her. Unfortunately he weather meant that the scenes filmed outside were affected by the heavy wind which caused havoc with the props. The dinner party scene also seemed unsuccessful and I do not feel like the result works well with the aesthetic I was attempting to achieve. This has made me rethink my approach to the video so I will potentially brainstorm new ideas and ways to continue keeping my theme of Feeling trapped  and escaping.

shooting for the album cover

Once i completed my light box I did some test shots to see if it worked how I wanted it to work. O i did some tests shoots to experiment.

In these shots i experimented with different lighting and position to see if making changes would have an effect. Once i was pleased with the outcomes I began shooting images for my album cover.
here is a contact sheet showing a selection of images from this  shoot:
Below are the images of how i had the lighting set out around my light box so to show my method, this including the settings i had the lights on which created the outcomes i was happy with

Making a light box

Once I had decided what I wanted to do for the front of the digipack i knew that i was going to need a light box so to easily achieve the bright yellow background i wanted in the pictures.
Having done some research i found a variation of tutorials to create a working light box, many of which didn't seem to need a lot of resources.

to make the light box i used:
- Scissors
- Glue
- A3 coloured paper as this will be used for the bacground
- grease proof/ parchment paper to line the sides so the light will not be so harsh
- a box

1. I cut the lid out of the box
2. I then measured out squares in 3 of the sides of the box, these were the areas that were going to be cut.
3. once cutting those areas I glued the parchment paper over the squares, this is how the light will get through the paper.
4. I then used two A3 sheets of yellow paper as the background and the bottom of the box by glueing the top side of the paper to the roof of the box.

Website skills Development

Using Wix I created a mock website as a way to practice for when I create my outcome, this gave me an understanding on what i will need to include on my website and how i would be able to do so.

Ideas Update

Video

For my video I want to create a narrative that is easy for the viewer to understand, the idea is that we see a character (the artists) in various scenarios that they find boring and therefore makes them unhappy  due to the false nature of those scenarios. I want to make use of a shift in colour which would connote to the shift in the character's circumstances.

Digipak

Initially I was inspired by Rosie The Riveter and considered doing a modern day interpretation of her look including the bright yellow background, when looking back I saw that this concept had been done many times before and not very original. I then decided to simplify  this ideas by making use of the bright yellow background behind a teacup with a black liquid being poured in. This imagery would of been a comment on the themes expressed in the video as the cup would over represented the artist and the black liquid would of stood for the poison and lies she felt like she was being fed. It would also be a a comment in some of the scenes in the music video where the artist would of been seen with that same cup.

Website

I saw that simple websites are more popular among contemporary artists as it appeals to a people who use the website to those who go on them mainly to purchase merchandise and find updates on the artist. For my website i want to have the theme of the Yellow Walls all throughout it as a way to promote my album. This  including a Yellow background and the merchandise being yellow. I will also have images of my artist in a similar outfit to what she is wearing in the packaging and video so to link all the products together.
